The forested slopes of the Odaigahara mountains (highest point: 1695 m) are a protected ecosystem known for their high species diversity and beautiful scenery, justly included in the Yoshino-Kumano National Park, Kii Peninsula, Honshu. This area is among the wettest parts of Japan where annual precipitation may locally reach 4500 mm or more, supporting a rich forest flora with several species of conifers endemic to Japan, including Koya-maki and Toga-sawara.
